FAO to help develop and implement GIS systems for monitoring agricultural lands in Kyrgyzstan

Kyrgyzstan launches the initiative “Greening the Economy: Know More, Act Better, Improve Results,” EastFruit reports .

This joint project between the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) aims to change the approach to crop planning and management using a modern geographic information system for field monitoring.

This will help develop climate-resilient agriculture and strengthen the country’s food security, according to FAO. Agriculture plays a key role in the economy of the Kyrgyz Republic, providing about 9% of GDP and employing more than 17% of the working population in 2024, according to the National Statistical Committee.

According to the Paris Agreement, the republic has committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 15.97% by 2030, Agro.kg reports .

Agriculture, which accounts for about a third of national emissions, is a key focus in achieving these climate goals.

“The cornerstone of the initiative is the development and implementation of a GIS-based cropland monitoring system, an advanced digital platform designed to support evidence-based decision-making in agricultural land use. The system will be managed and hosted by the State Agency for Land Resources, Cadastre, Geodesy and Cartography and used by the Ministry of Water Resources, Agriculture and Processing Industry, as well as agro-industrial enterprises,” FAO notes.

By providing real-time information on environmental and agronomic aspects, the system will help farmers and other stakeholders improve their efficiency and reduce their negative impact on the environment.

The initiative also includes the development of a free app for farmers called AgroMap, funded by the Ministry of Digital Development, to bring information to the field.

The GIS system for monitoring croplands will provide:

  • determination of crops and land use efficiency;
  • assessment of potential productivity levels and agro-ecological shifts;
  • monitoring crop rotation and sustainable water use;
  • early crop yield forecasting and irrigation assessment;
  • enhanced integration with the national land registry.

By using data and taking climate-smart approaches into account, the project will help rural communities adapt to climate change, strengthen agribusiness supply chains and promote economic growth, FAO believes.
