A regional coordination centre for glacier research is being established under the auspices of the World Meteorological Organization
DUSHANBE, May 28 — Sputnik. A regional center for studying glaciers is planned to be created in the capital of Tajikistan.
This was discussed at a meeting between the President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon and the Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Andrea Celeste Saulo.
They noted the importance of opening such a center in Dushanbe.
According to the press service of the head of state, Saulo arrived in the Tajik capital to participate in the High-Level International Conference on Glacier Conservation.
A regional glacier coordination centre is being established under the auspices of WMO and with the assistance of other development partners.
Rahmon and Saulo also discussed issues of expanding cooperation between the parties and the agenda of the upcoming conference. It is noted that the Tajik leader expressed gratitude to the head of the WMO for supporting Tajikistan’s global initiatives, in particular in the field of glacier conservation.
The International High-Level Conference on Glacier Conservation will be held in Dushanbe from May 29 to 31. More than 2,500 people from 80 countries and international organizations, including the UN, CIS, and SCO, will take part in its work.
At the initiative of Tajikistan, the UN General Assembly declared 2025 the International Year of Glacier Conservation, and March 21 as World Glacier Day.
