In Kyrgyzstan, the Kambarata Hydroelectric Power Plant-1 project, with an installed capacity of 1,860 MW, is in the active phase of implementation, reports Kazinform’s own correspondent.

According to  the Kyrgyz Ministry of Energy, a tender was held in 2025 to update the feasibility study developed in 2014. The winning bidder is currently undertaking the work. The type of dam for the hydroelectric power plant has now been determined. To finance these initiatives, the World Bank has allocated an additional $13.6 million, in addition to the $5 million it had previously provided.
In addition, the bank is considering providing $1.5 billion for key construction work on the project in Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan. It is noted that nine donors have expressed their willingness to finance the Kambarata HPP-1 project in the amount of $2.5 billion.
It was also announced that the project’s environmental and social impact assessment had been completed, for which the World Bank allocated $18.6 million.
The Ministry is currently reviewing proposals and comments submitted by the Kazakh and Uzbek sides on the draft intergovernmental agreement. Preparations are underway for expert negotiations at the level of the interdepartmental working group of the Kyrgyz Republic.
It was previously reported that the European Investment Bank and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development will each allocate $500 million to Kyrgyzstan for the construction of the Kambarata-1 Hydroelectric Power Plant (HPP-1) project.
