QAZAQ GREEN. On April 9, the official opening ceremony of the Kazakhstan–China Hydrogen Energy Technology Innovation Center took place at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University. The event brought together Kazakhstan’s Minister of Energy Yerlan Akkenzhenov, Mayor of Shanghai Gong Zheng, Minister of Science and Higher Education Sayasat Nurbek, and the university’s Rector Zhanseit Tuimebayev.
The establishment of the Center marks a concrete step toward building a modern technological ecosystem in Kazakhstan, bringing together fundamental science, education, and industry. During the meeting, Energy Minister Yerlan Akkenzhenov emphasized that integration with leading international partners will significantly accelerate the sector’s development.
“Hydrogen energy is one of the strategic priorities for the development of the energy sector. The Concept adopted in 2024 laid the legal and economic foundation for the creation of a new industry aimed at decarbonizing the economy. The new center should become a key platform for training next-generation engineers, conducting applied research, and rapidly introducing innovations into production,” Akkenzhenov said..
The Center’s practical foundation is a trilateral memorandum signed between Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and Energy China International. The document is aimed at advancing large-scale scientific and technological cooperation and facilitating the transfer of advanced solutions.
Under the agreement, the parties will conduct joint research, test hydrogen technologies, and launch pilot projects. A particular focus is placed on the commercialization of scientific results and their integration into industrial projects in Kazakhstan. The partnership also предусматривает активный академический обмен специалистами.
The development of hydrogen energy is a key element of the global transition to cleaner energy systems. According to Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Energy, the country has significant potential in this field due to its natural resource base and growing renewable energy capacity. Cooperation with Chinese technology partners is expected to strengthen Kazakhstan’s position in emerging energy markets and support industrial modernization.
