Kazakhstan and UNECE discuss energy resilience and low-carbon technologies

 

QAZAQ GREEN. On the sidelines of RES-2026, a bilateral meeting took place between Minister of Energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan Yerlan Akkenzhenov and Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe Tatiana Molchan. During the talks, the parties discussed key areas of cooperation in the field of energy and sustainable development.

The sides reviewed issues related to enhancing energy resilience, developing renewable energy sources, forming a regional energy market, as well as implementing projects in energy efficiency and critical minerals extraction.

Particular attention was paid to reducing the environmental footprint of baseload generation. In particular, the introduction of clean coal technologies was discussed, along with the prospects for coal chemistry and deep coal processing.

Kazakhstan reaffirmed its commitment to developing a green economy and achieving a 15% share of renewable energy sources in the electricity generation mix by 2030. The development of hydrogen energy was also noted as a new promising direction, including the implementation of large investment projects and the formation of export potential for green hydrogen.

The parties emphasised the importance of attracting green financing, technology transfer and strengthening scientific and technical cooperation, including workforce training in the energy sector.

Following the meeting, both sides confirmed their mutual interest in further developing the partnership between Kazakhstan and UNECE in the field of sustainable energy and low-carbon development.
