Active preparations for protective measures against locust pests have begun in Kazakhstan, El.kz news agency reports with reference to the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
At a meeting of the republican headquarters, which was chaired by Vice Minister of Agriculture Baglan Bekbauov, key measures to combat locusts in 2025 were discussed. The meeting was attended by representatives of relevant departments, deputy akims of the regions, as well as heads of territorial divisions of the State Inspection Committee in the Agro-Industrial Complex.
According to preliminary forecasts, locust pests may spread over an area of 2.1 million hectares in 2025. This is 1 million hectares less than last year. However, preparations for the season are being carried out at an increased level.
7.1 billion tenge have been allocated from the republican budget. It is planned to survey 38 million hectares of land with these funds. 4,342 people and 443 units of spraying equipment will be involved in large-scale work – this is twice as much as in 2024.
In regions with a potentially high risk level, operational headquarters have already been created under the leadership of deputy akims of the regions. In addition, a comprehensive plan and roadmap for organizing protective measures have been approved.
Particular attention is being paid to the Zhambyl and Turkestan regions, where work has already begun. Specialists from six other regions, including Akmola, Kostanay, Pavlodar and Abay regions, have been additionally sent to the Turkestan region. 20 heads of district branches and 12 vehicles with specialists have left for the regions to monitor the Moroccan locust population.
Large-scale interregional coordination will improve the effectiveness of the response and minimize damage to agricultural land in the most vulnerable areas.
