Kazakhstan to commission 245 MW of renewable energy in 2026

QAZAQ GREEN. Kazakhstan’s renewable energy portfolio is set to grow by 245 MW in 2026, with two wind farms, four solar power plants and a small hydroelectric plant joining the grid, the Ministry of Energy reported.

The new facilities are part of a broader energy push: Kazakhstan plans to bring 2.64 GW of total generating capacity — both conventional and renewable — online this year. The rollout is expected to eliminate the country’s energy deficit by the end of Q1 2027 and deliver a sustained electricity surplus by 2029.

At an expanded government meeting, the head of state noted that Kazakhstan imported 3.7 billion kWh of electricity last year and called for faster commissioning of new capacity. Together, the facilities coming online in 2026 are projected to generate around 16 billion kWh annually.

Wind and solar

In the Kostanay region, two wind farms will come online: Aspan Energo (50 MW) and Hyperborea (100 MW). Four solar power plants totalling 92 MW will be commissioned across the Mangistau, Zhambyl and Kostanay regions and Zhetysu. The Turkestan region will also see the launch of a small hydroelectric plant operated by TAUENERGO.

Conventional generation

Alongside renewable development, Kazakhstan is pushing ahead with large conventional generation projects. Four combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) plants totalling 2.4 GW will anchor the country’s energy security drive, supplying electricity and heat to southern regions.

A 240 MW CCGT in the Kyzylorda region is currently in the commissioning phase, while a 1 GW plant in the Turkestan region remains under construction. In Almaty, modern CCGTs with a combined capacity of 1.1 GW are being built at CHPP-2 and CHPP-3, set to provide the city with reliable, cleaner energy.

Regional generation is also being reinforced at the Tekeli Energy Complex (17 MW) and the Atyrau CHPP, where a new turbine unit and boiler totalling 60 MW are being brought online.
