The implementation of the project in the metropolis will become a pilot initiative and will set a benchmark for the development of similar production in other regions of the country.
The signing of the Investment Agreement for the project “Electricity Production Based on Waste Utilization” took place in the Almaty Akimat. The document was signed by the Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan Erlan Nysanbayev and the Chinese investor LLP “Junxin Environmental Protection (Almaty)”, – reports Almaty.tv .
Akim of Almaty Darkhan Satybaldy emphasized the strategic importance of the project, noting that for the largest metropolis of Kazakhstan this is not just a new investment project, but an important step towards the formation of a modern waste management system that meets the best international standards.
According to the Head of the city, about 1 million tons of solid municipal waste is generated in Almaty annually, and it is here that it is important to begin implementing such large-scale initiatives.
“The new innovative plant will significantly reduce the volume of waste disposal and improve the environmental situation. We are confident that the project will make a significant contribution to the development of the green economy and will serve the benefit of current and future generations,” said Darkhan Satybaldy.
The future plant will be the first waste-to-energy recycling enterprise in Kazakhstan and will ensure almost complete capture of emissions, which complies with the environmental safety standards of the European Union. The capacity of the enterprise will be 1,600–2,000 tons of waste per day with the generation of 60 MW of electricity. The total investment is 280 million US dollars. The plant will be equipped with modern automated control systems and a multi-stage cleaning system, which will ensure minimal impact on the environment.
The project covers the complex processing of solid municipal waste, medical and municipal waste, and sewage sludge. It will be used as a base for developing areas of electric and thermal energy production, data processing on renewable sources, and the creation of a center for training personnel and improving environmental awareness of the population. During the construction period, about 700 temporary jobs will be created, and after the facility is put into operation, more than 120 permanent jobs.
Energy utilization of waste is one of the key areas enshrined in the Environmental Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The implementation of the project in Almaty will become a pilot initiative and will set a benchmark for the development of similar production in other regions of the country.
