The Presidents of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, Sadyr Japarov and Emomali Rahmon, signed an agreement on the state border between the two countries. Two checkpoints on the Tajik-Kyrgyz border, closed since 2021, have resumed operation. Flights from Bishkek to Dushanbe and Khujand will also be launched on March 14.
Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov and Tajik President Emomali Rahmon signed an agreement on the state border between the two countries on March 13. The signing took place as part of Rahmon’s state visit to Bishkek.
“I am confident that the signing of the agreement on the state border between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan will be a fateful historical event that will be received with enthusiasm by both the peoples of our countries and the wider international community,” said Sadyr Japarov. “This step will make a significant contribution to strengthening security, stability and sustainable development not only of our states, but also of the entire Central Asian region.”
“The border agreement will create a solid foundation for further strengthening interstate relations,” Emomali Rahmon emphasized.
After signing the document, the heads of the two countries took part in an online ceremony to reopen the Kyzyl-Bel and Kairagach checkpoints on the Tajik-Kyrgyz border, which had been closed since the spring of 2021 following an armed conflict .
In total, following the negotiations, the presidents of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan signed 16 documents, including a Joint Statement on further strengthening the ties of friendship and good-neighborliness.
They agreed to increase the volume of mutual trade to $500 million and expressed their readiness to accelerate the launch of the Central Asia-South Asia-1000 (CASA-1000) electricity transmission and trade project .
Emomali Rahmon also announced that an agreement between Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan on the point of junction of state borders will soon be concluded. The document, according to him, is planned to be signed within the framework of the upcoming celebration of Navruz in Khujand on March 31.

On March 12, President Sadyr Japarov and the head of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon got acquainted with the ethnocultural program organized as part of his state visit to the country in the Ala-Archa state natural park. This was reported by the press service of the head of state.
Upon arrival, the leaders of the two countries were solemnly greeted by akyns-improvisers, Alptar bogatyrs and girls in national costumes from the Atalar izi collection.
At the alley of artisans, the heads of state got acquainted with the life of the nomadic people, presented in the installations of yurts. They immersed themselves in the atmosphere of the traditional life of the Kyrgyz people, visited workshops where craftsmen demonstrated their skills in the manufacture of unique hand-made products.
After viewing the exhibition, the presidents took places of honor in Khan-boz ui. As part of the ethnocultural program, a concert was presented with the participation of the folklore and ethnographic ensemble “Kambarkan” and the state dance ensemble “Ak-Maral”. Then the manaschy presented the guests with the epic “Manas”, accompanied by the sounds of the kerney, surnay and dobulbas.
The ethnocultural program ended with a presentation of the traditional hunt “Salbuurun”, where berkutchi, archers and taiganchi demonstrated the art of hunting, passed down from generation to generation.
