Kyrgyzstan implements international practices of “green” economy

As part of sustainable development and the implementation of the principles of the “green” economy, the first plant in the country and in Central Asia is being built in Bishkek, which will process solid municipal waste while simultaneously producing electricity.

Similar technologies are successfully used in Europe, Japan, South Korea and Singapore. Kyrgyzstan is introducing a similar approach for the first time on a capital-wide scale: at the initial stage, the plant will process up to 1,000 tons of waste per day and produce up to 450 thousand kW/h of electricity, which creates a real alternative to waste disposal and allows it to be used as an energy resource.

On May 11, 2025, the President of the Kyrgyz Republic Sadyr Japarov visited the sanitary landfill and the construction site of the plant. During the visit, the head of state got acquainted with the progress of construction work, received information about technological solutions and emphasized the importance of meeting the project deadlines, the quality of the work performed and environmental safety requirements.

In the future, the processing capacity is planned to be increased to 3,000 tons per day, which will open up new opportunities for the city’s ecosystem and significantly reduce the negative impact on the environment.

The Ministry of Natural Resources, Ecology and Technical Supervision of the Kyrgyz Republic considers this project as an important part of the national strategy for the transition to a “green” economy, aimed at reducing waste volumes, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and sustainable management of natural resources.

Reference: The concept of “Kyrgyzstan – a country of a green economy” and measures to implement the principles of a “green” economy were approved in 2018. The country is implementing key areas: development of renewable energy sources, efficient waste management, “green” agriculture, sustainable transport, ecotourism and stimulation of “green” investments. Currently, a new Program for the Development of a “Green” Economy in the Kyrgyz Republic until 2028 is being developed, taking into account global and regional challenges.

Such initiatives demonstrate that Kyrgyzstan is ready to implement advanced environmental solutions that meet international goals in the field of environmental protection and sustainable development.
