New renewable energy training of trainers program launched in Turkmenistan

QAZAQ GREEN.  From 2–3 September 2025, students and faculty at the State Energy Institute of Turkmenistan in Mary took part in a series of capacity-building activities organized by GIZ through two of its energy programs: EU4SustainableCentralAsia: Renewable Energy in Central Asia (EURECA) and EU for a Green Turkmenistan: Policy Dialogue and Climate Action 2024–2028. The sessions brought together faculty, researchers, and students to examine international developments and best practices in renewable energy.

The start of the program coincided with the beginning of the new academic year. On 1 September, Turkmenistan celebrates the Day of Knowledge and Student Youth, when students across the country return to their studies.

Abdurahmin Myratdurdyyev, representing the Ministry of Energy of Turkmenistan, and Borislav Dimitrov from the Delegation of the European Union in Turkmenistan, also attended the event and welcomed participants.

The training program is designed to strengthen regional learning and cooperation among research institutions working on energy system and policy analysis. It covers topics such as training of trainers for teachers, approaches to teaching renewable energy in Central Asia and beyond, best practices and trends, opportunities for the scientific community, regional challenges, and available technologies for monitoring, forecasting, and storage.

Students attended lectures on grid-connected solar rooftop power plants, which drew strong participation and interest, reflecting the growing curiosity about renewable energy in everyday life. Trainers engaged with national power training courses, while researchers examined large-scale solar park projects and outlined the next steps for collaboration.

The activities mark the launch of a Training of Trainers course on renewable energy in Turkmenistan. Participants who successfully complete the program in October will receive certificates after completing the required 72 hours of training.

The initiative is carried out under the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the Ministry of Energy of Turkmenistan and GIZ. It reflects the shared commitment to advance renewable energy knowledge, strengthen teaching capacity, and support the next generation of specialists in the field.
