On September 22, 2024, on the sidelines of the Summit of the Future in New York, the Republic of Tajikistan and the United Nations University (UNU) signed a Memorandum of Understanding on academic and scientific cooperation, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan reports. The Memorandum is reportedly aimed at expanding academic and scientific cooperation between Tajikistan, acting through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the UNU, acting through the Institute of Water, Environment and Health. The partnership aims to address critical global environmental challenges, with a particular focus on water, environment, health, food security, agriculture, climate change, biodiversity and the transition to sustainable development. The cooperation will facilitate knowledge sharing, capacity building initiatives and research to support the efforts of the Republic of Tajikistan and the United Nations at the national, regional and global levels. It will also contribute to strengthening science, technology, innovation and sustainable development initiatives in line with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. At a signing ceremony held at the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Tajikistan to the UN in New York, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan Sirojiddin Muhriddin and the Deputy Secretary-General of the UN, Rector of the UN University Tshilidzi Marwala signed this Memorandum, reflecting their commitment to the development of scientific approaches to solving urgent environmental problems.
