For Tajikistan, the energy transition is not only part of the global climate agenda but also a crucial condition for national development, strengthening energy security, industrial growth, and improving living standards. This was stated by Deputy Minister of Energy and Water Resources of the Republic of Tajikistan Sharif Mahmadzoda during the plenary session of the ministerial dialogue on promoting the energy transition based on renewable energy sources in Central Asia.
The plenary session entitled “International Cooperation for a Sustainable and Diversified Energy Future” was held as part of the Baku Energy Forum.
Speaking at the event, Sharif Mahmadzoda noted that approximately 95 percent of Tajikistan’s electricity is generated by hydroelectric power plants. He stated that this makes the country one of the world’s leaders in green energy production.
The Deputy Minister emphasized that climate change, melting glaciers, seasonal changes in river flows, and growing demand for electricity create the need to diversify the country’s energy balance, modernize infrastructure, and develop other renewable energy sources, including solar and wind energy.
The presentation focused on regional energy cooperation. Tajikistan’s renewed participation in the Unified Energy System of Central Asia and the implementation of the CASA-1000 project were cited as important factors in developing a regional clean energy market and strengthening energy ties between Central and South Asia.
According to the Ministry of Energy and Water Resources of the Republic of Tajikistan, the development of renewable energy and the expansion of regional cooperation remain important areas for ensuring a sustainable and diversified energy future.
