Tajikistan Takes the Helm of the Subsidiary Body on Implementation (SBI) – A Key Body of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity

Yerevan, October 28, 2026  During the 17th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP17), a representative from the Republic of Tajikistan was elected as Chair of the Subsidiary Body on Implementation (SBI).

*It is worth noting that this marks the first time in the history of the Convention that a representative from a Central Asian nation has been elected to chair the Subsidiary Body on Implementation (SBI).* This election serves as recognition of Tajikistan’s active role in advancing the Convention’s objectives and strengthening international cooperation in the field of biodiversity conservation. Currently, the Convention has 195 Parties, plus the European Union, making the CBD one of the most universal international environmental agreements.

The SBI is one of the two primary subsidiary bodies of the CBD; it is tasked with reviewing progress in the fulfillment of commitments by the Parties and preparing recommendations for the Conference of the Parties (COP). The role of the SBI Chair involves coordinating the intergovernmental process for assessing the implementation of the Convention, identifying strategic actions to address implementation gaps, and drafting decisions that are subsequently adopted at the COP.

In this new capacity, the representative from Tajikistan will coordinate efforts to evaluate the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, while also working to strengthen reporting and monitoring mechanisms. The SBI’s agenda also includes issues that will be carried forward to the 18th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP18), scheduled for 2028. Thus, Tajikistan’s chairmanship of the SBI lays the groundwork for influencing the shaping of the global biodiversity agenda.

Tajikistan’s election to this position serves as a testament to the international community’s confidence in the country’s leading role within the global environmental agenda. At the same time, this appointment enables Tajikistan to make a more significant contribution to strengthening multilateral cooperation on biodiversity and advancing the global sustainable development agenda—particularly with regard to mountain ecosystems and water resources.

The Committee for Environmental Protection under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan, as the authorized state body for the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), will continue its active efforts to integrate global environmental goals into national policy and to strengthen international cooperation in the field of environmental protection.
