Technological Innovation and Green Energy: Turkmenistan and the EU Strengthen Partnership for Climate Resilience

From March 24 to 27, 2026, Turkmenistan hosted two technical seminars focused on supporting the green transition and integrating technological innovations into the energy sector. The events were organized under the project “European Union for a Green Turkmenistan: Policy Dialogue and Climate Action 2024-2029,” co-funded by the European Union and the German Federal Foreign Office, and implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH.

Leading experts from the Clausthal University of Technology (Germany) served as the primary trainers for the seminars, presenting advanced German developments in energy efficiency, systems analysis, and engineering innovation to Turkmen specialists.

The first seminar, titled “Integration of Renewable Energy Sources,” took place on March 24 at the State Energy Institute in Mary. German experts provided energy specialists with an overview of cutting-edge wind and solar generation technologies, green hydrogen, and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), while discussing the technical aspects of integrating renewable energy sources (RES) into the national grid.

In parallel with the technical training, a high-level delegation from the European Union and the German Federal Foreign Office, the project’s key donors, conducted a study visit to the Mary velayat. The visit focused on strengthening the strategic partnership and observing the practical implementation of project activities on the ground.

Subsequently, on March 27, the second seminar, “Well Integrity: New Approaches in Oil and Gas Production, Including AI and Technologies for Enhancing Gas Field Productivity,” was held in Ashgabat. Specialists from the oil and gas sector explored innovative methods for ensuring well integrity, materials science, and corrosion control. Practical applications of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for predictive maintenance and the optimization of water-loaded wells were also presented. Significant emphasis was placed on industrial health, safety, and environment (HSE) standards and the minimization of ecological risks.

Our cooperation in critical areas such as methane emission reduction and RES integration represents a tangible contribution to the global environmental agenda,” stated Dr. Caroline Milow, Project Manager of “European Union for a Green Turkmenistan: Policy Dialogue and Climate Action 2024-2029.”
