3rd meeting of the regional network for the EU-UNEP project

On May 13, Sherzod Muminov, Deputy Director of the Scientific and Information Center of the Interstate Commission on Water Coordination (NIC ICWC), and head of the EU-UNEP project, met with the Plenipotentiary Representative of the President of the Kyrgyz Republic in the Jalal-Abad region, Tilek Kydyrmaevich Tekebaev.

The project’s progress and achievements were discussed at the meeting. Tekebayev T.K. emphasized the project’s importance, expressed his interest and comprehensive support for its implementation, and expressed his readiness for future cooperation in the areas of water resources and climate.

Following this meeting, the 3rd Meeting of the EU-UNEP Regional Network was held on 14-15 May 2026 in Manas, Kyrgyz Republic.

The event aimed to strengthen regional cooperation and practical coordination through experience sharing, mutual learning, and joint planning along the approved subproject areas. The meeting also provided a platform for deepening technical collaboration, strengthening accountability, and improving the consistency and quality of project implementation.

The meeting was attended by representatives of the Jalal-Abad regional authorities, water management and environmental agencies, NGOs, the expert community, as well as EU-UNEP project grantees from Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.

The opening remarks were delivered by the Head of the Office of the Plenipotentiary Representative of the President of the Kyrgyz Republic in the Jalal-Abad Region, the First Deputy Akim of the Suzak District of the Jalal-Abad Region, and a representative of the regional office of the Ministry of Natural Resources, Ecology, and Technical Supervision. They emphasized the importance of the project to support adaptation to climate change as a path to socio-economic stability not only in the Kyrgyz Republic but throughout the Fergana Valley.

Sherzod Muminov, Deputy Director of the Scientific and Research Center of the International Water Coordination Center (NICWC) and project manager, noted the exceptional relevance and importance of cooperation within the project between the countries of the region. B. Gozhenko, representing the NICWC, also moderated the meeting.

The project grantees presented and discussed preliminary plans and results for the subprojects.

In addition to discussing the main areas of activity, grant recipients were given training on the use of water-saving irrigation systems, including a theoretical lecture and practical exercises.

The second day of the meeting was held on the grounds of the implementation of subprojects of one of the project’s grant recipients – the Consortium of the Orchun NGO and the Independent Environmental Expertise NGO in the Suzak district of the Jalal-Abad region.

The meeting participants visited three rural municipalities, where they presented key nature-based solutions for adaptation to climate change at the local community level, which will be implemented within the framework of the project until March 2027.

Following the meeting, participants emphasized the high relevance of the nature-oriented measures presented and their contribution to increasing climate resilience, reducing conflict potential, and strengthening socioeconomic stability in the region.
