Azerbaijan to add 7–8 GW of solar and wind capacity by 2032, says President Aliyev

QAZAQ GREEN. Azerbaijan plans to commission an additional 7–8 gigawatts of solar and wind power by 2032 under already signed contracts, President Ilham Aliyev said during a meeting with a delegation of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce led by Senior Vice President for International Affairs, Middle East and Türkiye Khush Choksi, according to Report az.

Speaking about criticism directed at hydrocarbon-producing countries, Aliyev noted that many previous COP host nations produce up to ten times more oil and gas than Azerbaijan, yet did not face comparable media pressure.

According to the president, countries should be assessed by how they use revenues from hydrocarbon exports and by their contribution to addressing climate change. He emphasized that Azerbaijan ensures a fair distribution of national wealth and is actively investing in renewable energy despite having natural gas reserves sufficient for at least 100 years of domestic use and exports.

Azerbaijan currently has around 2 GW of installed power capacity, Aliyev said, adding that the planned 7–8 GW of new solar and wind generation is based on binding contracts rather than memoranda of understanding. He described this approach as a demonstration of the country’s responsibility in the global climate agenda.
