Central Asian countries have divided the water resources of the Syr Darya and Amu Darya among themselves

Representatives of five post-Soviet Central Asian republics have signed protocols and agreements on the distribution of resources of the Syr Darya and Amu Darya rivers in order to ensure irrigation of agricultural lands and at the same time not to disturb the ecosystem of the water bodies. The relevant data have been published in the documentation of the Interstate Coordination Water Management Commission of the region, Fergana.ru reports.

In particular, experts have outlined water consumption limits for the vegetation period of 2025. That is, at the time when plants grow and develop, which requires watering. In Central Asia, the period lasts from April to October.

In total, about 11.9 billion cubic meters of water will flow from the Syr Darya for agricultural needs. These resources will be distributed among the countries as follows:

Uzbekistan – 8.8 billion cubic meters;

Tajikistan – 1.9 billion cubic meters;

Kazakhstan (Dustlik canal) – 909 million cubic meters;

Kyrgyzstan – 270 million cubic meters.

The water intake limit from the Amu Darya in April-October of this year will be almost 40 billion cubic meters. Most of the resources will be diverted to the Kerki hydropost, where experts study the quality of water and predict its consumption in the near future. The waters of the Amu Darya basin will be distributed among the states as follows:

Uzbekistan – 16 billion cubic meters;

Turkmenistan – 15.5 billion cubic meters;

Tajikistan – 7 billion cubic meters.

In addition, water will be supplied to the river delta and the Aral Sea, where the resource consumption will amount to 2.1 billion cubic meters.

It also indicates how the republics use the water of the Amu Darya without taking into account the vegetation period. According to experts, three states meet the consumption norm. Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan have used more than 90% of the resources allocated to them, but Tajikistan turned out to be the most economical – the figure is slightly less than 80%.

It is also noted that from October last year to March 2025, over 1.5 billion cubic meters of water entered the river delta and the Aral Sea.

Analysts will continue to monitor resource allocation to ensure equitable and efficient water use in the region, the report said.
