Glaciers and the broader cryosphere are essential components of our planet’s life support system. Building on the momentum of the International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation, 2025—initiated by President of the Republic of Tajikistan, His Excellency Emomali Rahmon—the international community has taken a decisive step forward.
At the seventh session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-7), held in Nairobi, Republic of Kenya, 8–12 December, member states officially adopted the resolution on the “Preservation of glaciers and the broader cryosphere, in particular in mountain regions”.
This resolution explicitly welcomes the outcomes of the High-level International Conference on Glaciers’ Preservation held in Dushanbe, cementing Tajikistan’s role in elevating this critical issue to the global stage.
The adoption of this resolution is the culmination of Tajikistan’s continuous efforts at the global level in recent years, turning the high-level dialogue into concrete global actions that:
Strengthens International Cooperation: It encourages countries to work together to address the causes and impacts of glacier loss, particularly in mountain regions.
Empowers Local Voices: It highlights the importance of local communities, ensuring their meaningful participation and traditional knowledge are central to preservation efforts.
Mobilizes Support: It encourages global development banks and funds to provide the necessary resources to help developing countries build resilience.
Bridges Science and Policy: It requests new studies to better connect scientific research with policy-making, ensuring that future actions are guided by the latest data.
This adoption marks a significant victory for the climate agenda and the sustainable future of our planet’s water resources.
