QAZAQ GREEN.  At an expanded board meeting of Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Energy, Minister Yerlan Akkenzhenov presented the sector’s performance results and outlined the key priorities for the year ahead.

According to the minister, Kazakhstan currently operates 162 renewable energy facilities with a combined capacity of 3.5 GW, accounting for 7% of the country’s total power generation. In 2025, nine new renewable energy plants with a combined capacity of 503.5 MW were commissioned, while total renewable power output reached 8.6 billion kWh — exceeding the annual plan by 19.4%.

Among the year’s milestones was Kazakhstan’s first-ever auction for a large-scale wind power plant, as well as the signing of an agreement with a Chinese company for the construction of a major solar power facility.

Looking ahead to 2026, the Ministry plans to increase renewable energy output to 8.8 billion kWh and implement 10 new projects totalling 245.8 MW of installed capacity. Additional priorities include signing agreements with Chinese investors on wind farms equipped with energy storage systems, updating the national Hydrogen Energy Development Concept through 2040, and passing a new Law on Alternative Energy Sources.
