Kyrgyzstan proposes expanding the small hydropower category to 50 MW

QAZAQ GREEN. Lawmakers in Kyrgyzstan are considering raising the capacity threshold for small hydropower plants from 30 MW to 50 MW. A draft law introducing the change has been approved in the second reading by the parliamentary committee on industrial policy, transport, the fuel and energy sector, architecture and construction, according to 24.kg.

According to Energy Minister Taalaibek Ibraev, the bill aims to create more favorable conditions for the development of renewable energy and to attract investment to the country’s energy sector.

Ibraev noted that the current capacity limit often constrains the implementation of economically viable and investment-attractive projects. The proposed amendments, he said, would help draw investors and support the introduction of modern technologies in the energy industry.

“Plants with a capacity of up to 50 MW can be efficiently integrated into the power system without posing significant risks to grid stability, while making a meaningful contribution to meeting domestic demand and reducing seasonal dependence on hydropower resources,” the explanatory note to the draft law states.
