This spring, temperatures in the country have already risen significantly above normal inmid-March, including records above 30° C in the foothills of Kopetdag and in the extreme southwest of the country.

At the same time, meteorologists reported record drought, which has been going on in some regions for several months. In some places, only 0-10% of the precipitation from the norm since November fell. In the Bakharden and Gokdepe etraps, the drought was defined as extreme – this is the highest value in the classification. Observers noted that high temperatures coupled with a lack of moisture can have an extremely negative impact on ecosystems, the agricultural sector and infrastructure.
By the end of May, meteorologists are preparing to declare the month the warmest in the entire history of observations in Ashgabat. As of May 17, Meteorological Journal knew of 7 days oftemperature records, broken in the capital of Turkmenistan since May 1. In some periods, there were waves of abnormal heat, when the average daily temperature exceeded the norm by 10 ° C or more. On May 17, the average temperature for the month was 27.5 ° C, while the record for the entire month belongs to 2014 and 2021 – 27 ° C.
There is a high probability that Ashgabat will also record record drought values this May. Since November, precipitation has not exceeded 50% of the monthly norm. In April, the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI-6) reached -2.65, while drought is considered extreme at -2, which usually occurs once every 50 years. A similar situation is in the Ahal velayat, especially in the Bakharden, Gokdepe and Ak-Bugday etraps.
