Strengthening Groundwater Monitoring Capacity in Kyrgyzstan Through Finnish–Kyrgyz Cooperation

From 4 to 7 August 2026, within the framework of the project “EU4SustainableCentralAsia: Joint Action and Coordination on Water, Energy and Climate Change,” implemented by GIZ under the Green Central Asia initiative in cooperation with the Geological Survey of Finland (GTK), a capacity-building training seminar on “Groundwater Monitoring and Data Collection” was held, bringing together Finnish and Kyrgyz hydrogeologists to strengthen professional skills in groundwater monitoring and climate-sensitive water resources management.

The theoretical part of the programme covered modern monitoring methods, logger installation, groundwater sampling, and quality assurance and control (QA/QC), including the safe handling of hazardous substances, while the practical part, conducted in the Sary-Oy area, allowed participants to apply their knowledge in practice — through well inspection, logger maintenance, sample collection, and data analysis. Building on the cooperation launched during GTK’s first assessment mission to Kyrgyzstan in October 2025, the seminar contributes to strengthening the capacity of the Kyrgyz Hydrogeological Expedition and the country’s wider hydrogeological services to obtain reliable data needed for effective water resources planning.
