In the city of Almaty, the 32nd meeting of the Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan Commission on the use of interstate water management facilities on the Chu and Talas rivers took place. The delegation from Kyrgyzstan was led by Mr. A. Sokeev, the Director of the Water Resources Service of the Ministry of Agriculture, while the Kazakh delegation was presented by Mr. N. Apdamzharov, the Vice Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation. Established in accordance with the 2000 Agreement between the two governments, the Commission operates to utilize water management facilities of interstate use on the Chu and Talas rivers to strengthen mutually beneficial cooperation.

From 2006 to 2023, the Commission held 31 sessions, with the joint secretariat conducting over 39 additional meetings. At the latest meeting in Almaty, discussions revolved around the implementation of decisions made at the previous session in Bishkek in October 2022. Topics included the scope of work on facilities of interstate use on the Chu and Talas rivers for the year 2023, repair and restoration efforts, and an increase in Kazakhstan’s co-financing. Co-chairs signed a joint statement approving the Strategic Action Program (SAP) in the basins of the Chu and Talas rivers for 2022-2030. The SAP aims at effective cooperation in the water management sector, considering climate change. It encompasses a Joint Action Program and National Action Plans for the Chu and Talas river basins for 2022-2030. The implementation of SAP will contribute to broader collaboration between the two countries in the Commission’s activities. The meeting in Almaty was organized with active support from the government of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
