A scientific and practical conference on the topic of “Protection of glaciers and rational use of water resources – a key factor in sustainable development” was held in Khorog, the administrative center of GBAO. The event was attended by representatives of government bodies, scientific circles and experts in the field of environmental protection, the press service of the local administration reported.
The conference was opened by the head of GBAO Mirzonabot Alisher Khudoberdi, who emphasized the importance of Tajikistan’s initiatives in the field of water resources. In his speech, he noted that climate change and the growing industrial impact on nature require urgent measures to protect the hydrosphere and atmosphere.
Representatives of the Committee for Environmental Protection, the Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan, Khorog State University, the Hydrometeorology Agency and Pomirenergy took part in the discussions. Participants emphasized the importance of the initiatives proposed by Tajikistan at the UN level, including declaring 2025 the International Year of Glacier Conservation and establishing World Glacier Day on March 21.
“Tajikistan, despite its rich water resources, is facing the consequences of climate change, which requires increased work on monitoring and protecting glaciers,” said Deputy Chairman of the Committee for Environmental Protection Loik Sherali Rahmonzoda.
The conference discussed issues of glacier melting, sustainable use of water resources and their role in the energy sector. Representatives of the scientific community presented reports on global environmental threats and ways to overcome them.
Following the conference, the participants expressed their readiness to continue work on the implementation of national and international programs aimed at protecting ecosystems and preserving water resources.
