QAZAQ GREEN.  Construction has started on the 1 GW Mirny wind farm in the Moyinkum district of the Zhambyl Region, marking one of the largest renewable energy projects currently underway in the country.

The project is being developed by TotalEnergies with an estimated investment of $1.1 billion. Commissioning is targeted for the fourth quarter of 2028.

Once completed, the wind farm will have an installed capacity of 1 GW. The project предусматривает установку 150 современных ветротурбин, поставляемых Envision Energy и SANY. It will also include a 600 MWh battery energy storage system supplied by Saft.

Annual generation is expected to reach up to 4 billion kWh, with projected emissions reductions of at least 3.2 million tonnes of CO₂ per year.

The project is expected to strengthen Kazakhstan’s renewable energy capacity, support grid reliability and contribute to broader decarbonisation goals.

The country continues to expand its renewables pipeline. In 2024, authorities plan to commission 10 projects with a combined capacity of 245 MW, including wind, solar and hydropower plants, with total green electricity output projected at 8.8 billion kWh.

Auctions remain central to market development, with 6.7 GW scheduled for procurement between 2024 and 2027. Projects involving international developers such as Masdar, China Power and China Energy are expected to move forward.

Looking ahead, Kazakhstan aims to add more than 8 GW of renewable capacity by 2035 to strengthen energy security and diversify its power mix.
