KazTAG – The Astana Akimat spoke about the measures taken to eliminate the problem of flooding of streets with rainwater, because of which the capital has long been called the “Kazakhstan Venice,” the agency’s correspondent reports.

“Today, the capital’s storm sewer system consists of 18 treatment facilities and one storage pond, 610.8 km of main storm, drainage and channel sewerage networks, which ensure the removal of surface runoff from an area of more than 16.7 thousand hectares. Due to the intensive development of the city and the sharp increase in the catchment area, as well as the growth of unauthorized connections and discharges of household waste into the storm sewer network, today there are a number of problem areas in the city where the existing storm sewer networks cannot cope with the volumes of incoming water during periods of heavy rainfall,” the Astana Akimat reported in response to a request from KazTAG on Monday.

As explained by the capital’s authorities, the Akimat of Astana is carrying out work on the construction and reconstruction of storm sewer collectors, pumping stations and treatment facilities to increase the diameter and increase capacity.

“The State Enterprise on the Right of Economic Management “Elorda Eco system” constantly monitors storm sewer networks in order to prevent illegal connections. The construction of storm sewer networks and structures is carried out systematically and in stages, taking into account the development of the city of Astana in accordance with the general plan and allocated funding. In general, to ensure the drainage and purification of rainwater in the period 2025-2030, it is necessary to build 412.15 km of storm sewer networks, six treatment facilities, 35 pumping stations,” the city akimat added.

According to the response of the capital’s authorities, 245 problematic areas were identified in 2021.

“The work has been carried out by the State Unitary Enterprise on the Right of Economic Affairs “Elorda Eco System” and their number has now been reduced to eight, the operating organization of the State Unitary Enterprise on the Right of Economic Affairs “Elorda Eco System” is actively working on them to prevent flooding during floods. This year, funds have been allocated in accordance with the approved funding limits within the framework of the program “Development of the storm sewer system”. The volume of these investments will be specified as the republican and local budgets are adjusted and clarified. Specific figures for the volume of funding can be named by the end of this year,” the city authorities added.
