According to the official website of the World Tourism Organization, waste reduction, biodiversity conservation, and the protection of natural resources and ecosystems are essential for ensuring environmental sustainability. It is also emphasized that in 2025, greater investment will be required to enhance resilience to climate change.
In this context, it is worth noting that Uzbekistan has also intensified its environmental protection efforts and is hosting a number of international events. Particular attention is being paid to mitigating the adverse effects of climate change, which is a concern not only for the countries of Central Asia but for the entire world. For example, at the International Climate Forum held on April 4–5 in Samarkand, discussions focused on the need for scientific approaches and innovative solutions to overcome climate-related challenges, as well as measures to address the consequences of the triple planetary crisis.
In addition, Uzbekistan has been advancing a range of initiatives aimed at combating drought and desertification, as well as preserving biodiversity. Samarkand has hosted several major international conferences, including the 25th session of the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) General Assembly, CMS COP14 and CRIC-21, which focused respectively on tourism development, the protection of migratory species, and the fight against desertification and drought. Necessary measures and action pathways were identified at these events. Furthermore, the 20th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES COP20), which will take place from November 24 to December 5 of this year, will highlight the conservation of rare species of flora and fauna.
In recent years, Uzbekistan has also been paying increasing attention to environmental conditions in the development of tourism, while reshaping its approach to ecotourism. This has had a positive impact on the growth of the sector. After all, nature itself is the priority, and only with its preservation can progress be achieved in other areas. In this regard, the choice of the theme “Tourism and Sustainable Transformation” for World Tourism Day 2025 is more relevant than ever.

It was established in 1979 at the General Assembly of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO, now “UN Tourism”), held in Torremolinos, Spain. The objective is to promote tourism, highlight its contribution to the global economy, and strengthen international cooperation.
