China has launched the world’s first 1 MW flying wind turbine

In western China’s Xinjiang region, a prototype of the world’s most powerful flying wind turbine, the S1500, developed by Beijing-based startup Saw Energy Technology, was successfully launched into the sky . Resembling an airship the size of a basketball court and as tall as a 13-story building, this intriguing design is a helium-filled air platform that lifts generators up to a thousand meters into the air.

The series of launches took place between September 19 and 21, 2025, marking a significant milestone in the development of clean energy, once again underscoring China’s leadership in the global transition to green technologies. The turbine is capable of generating significant amounts of energy, which will provide cheaper and more reliable electricity to remote areas, especially during power outages.

Testing of the S1500 took place in spartan desert conditions. This included structural assembly, pressure testing, launch, and emergency platform folding in high winds day and night. During the test flight, the turbine generated one megawatt of electricity for the first time in history, fully meeting all planned targets, marking a key step toward the practical implementation of the development. Further testing is planned in various regions of China, and mass production is scheduled to begin in 2026, with the first units connecting to the power grid at the same time.

 

Initially, sky power plants will be a lifesaver during power outages caused by natural disasters, as well as for providing power to remote sites. This is facilitated by the relatively high cost of the energy generated. Eventually, as production volumes of sky power plants increase, the price may drop to an acceptable level—around 10 US cents per kWh. In this case, the regular and widespread deployment of sky power plants will become feasible.

Unlike traditional land-based wind turbines, which require massive steel towers, the S1500 uses a helium envelope to elevate the generators to heights of up to 1,500 meters and higher, where winds are stronger and more stable. Electricity is transmitted to the ground via ultra-strong cables, reducing material consumption in the wind energy industry by 40% and cutting manufacturing costs by 30%.

The developer previously tested the technology using more modest 50 and 100 kW units, lifting them to altitudes of 500 and 1,000 meters. This marks the Chinese company’s first foray into the development of sky power plant technology. Until recently, the record in this field was held by the American company Altaeros Energies, which lifted a 30 kW generator to an altitude of approximately 300 meters.
