Tajikistan and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) discussed the project “Efficient Water Resource Management of the ‘Bahri Tojik’ Reservoir” (Tajik Sea, or Kayrakkum Reservoir). The meeting took place on June 12 in Ulaanbaatar as part of the Tajik delegation’s working visit to Mongolia, reports the press service of the Ministry of Energy and Water Resources of Tajikistan.
On behalf of Tajikistan, the meeting was attended by the President’s Assistant for Economic Affairs Ne’matullo Hikmatullozoda and the Minister of Energy and Water Resources Daler Juma.
ADB was represented by the Director General of the Central and West Asia Department Lea Gutierrez and the Regional Head for Cooperation and Regional Integration Asad Alim.
The central topic of the negotiations was the project “Efficient Water Resource Management of the ‘Bahri Tojik’ Reservoir.”
During the meeting, Ne’matullo Hikmatullozoda noted that the project has transboundary and regional significance and is part of the group of “infrastructure projects for climate change adaptation that benefit more than one country.”
The project includes strengthening the reservoir’s protective dams to prevent flood risks, reconstructing and modernizing pumping stations, improving the land reclamation condition, and drainage and collector systems.
It is also planned to implement a modern digital SCADA management and monitoring system.
The project is expected to contribute to the efficient management of the ‘Bahri Tojik’ reservoir’s water resources under climate change conditions, enhance the reliability of water supply for agricultural land irrigation, and increase the potential for electricity production.
It was also noted at the meeting that the preliminary feasibility study of the project was prepared with the support of the Asian Development Bank.
Earlier, on April 6, 2026, Daler Juma held a meeting with the Director of the ADB’s Agriculture, Food Security, Natural Resources, and Rural Development Office Jiangfeng Zhang. The meeting also discussed issues of efficient water resource management of the ‘Bahri Tojik’ reservoir.
