Tajikistan discussed sustainable development priorities and water resources with ECOSOC

On January 13, 2026, Jonibek Hikmat, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Tajikistan to the United Nations, met with Mr. Lok Bahadur Thapa, President of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Tajikistan reported. During the meeting, an exchange of views took place on ECOSOC priorities for 2026, including strengthening coordination within the United Nations system and advancing the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The parties paid particular attention to water resources and climate change, their importance for sustainable development, climate resilience, and meeting the needs of vulnerable countries, particularly landlocked developing countries. In this context, Tajikistan’s commitment to developing global cooperation in the water sector and intensifying actions to implement Sustainable Development Goal 6, in particular within the framework of the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development, was emphasized.
