On August 2, the ministers of the water sector of Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan conducted a joint working visit to the Sughd region of Tajikistan, during which they familiarized themselves with the activities of a number of strategically important water infrastructure facilities. This was reported by the press center of the Ministry of Energy and Water Resources of the Republic of Tajikistan.

The working visit was attended by the Minister of Energy and Water Resources of Tajikistan Daler Juma, the Minister of Water Resources of Uzbekistan Shavkat Khamraev and the Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation of Kazakhstan Nurzhan Nurzhigitov.

The heads of departments visited the Somgar-1 and Khodjabakirgan-1 pumping stations in the Bobojon Gafurov district, as well as the Markham station in the city of Kanibadam. These facilities, built in the 1950s-1970s, still play an important role in providing water to agricultural lands in border areas.

“Despite decades of service, the pumping stations continue to function, but the equipment requires urgent modernization,” it was noted during the inspection of the facilities.

In addition to technical wear and tear, one of the problems remains high energy consumption, exceeding standard indicators, which reduces the efficiency of the facilities.

The joint visit was part of efforts to strengthen trilateral cooperation in water management and irrigation. The parties discussed ways to modernize pumping infrastructure, attract international investment, and exchange best practices in sustainable water use.
