The development of the global water agenda after 2030 was discussed in Dushanbe.

A special panel discussion on “Post-2030: The Way Forward. Shaping the Future Path for the Water Agenda” was held at the Kokhi Somon Complex as part of the Fourth High-Level International Conference on the International Decade for Action, “Water for Sustainable Development 2018–2028,” reports NIAT Khovar.

The discussion became one of the key expert platforms of the Dushanbe Water Process, bringing together representatives of governments, United Nations agencies, international financial institutions, the scientific community, civil society, youth organizations, and industry experts to discuss the future architecture of global water cooperation after 2030.

The event was organized by the Asian Development Bank and the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA), coordinated by UN-Water. The meeting was co-chaired by UN Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs Li Junhua and Senior Director of the Asian Development Bank’s Water and Urban Development Directorate Norio Saito.

During the discussions, it was noted that as the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development approaches its completion, the international community faces the need to develop new approaches to water resources management. Despite the significant political momentum generated by the International Water Action Decade and the 2023 UN Water Conference, progress in achieving the water-related Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 6, remains uneven.

It was emphasized that the increasing impact of climate change, population growth, ecosystem degradation and increasing pressure on water resources require the development of a more comprehensive and integrated international water policy. The keynote address at the meeting was delivered by Lok Bahadur Thapa, President of the UN Economic and Social Council and Permanent Representative of Nepal to the UN, who noted the importance of maintaining global political attention to water issues beyond 2030 and strengthening international coordination mechanisms.Source: https://en.avesta.tj/2026/05/28/the-development-of-the-global-water-agenda-after-2030-was-discussed-in-dushanbe/ Avesta.tj – All rights reserved.
