Several projects aim to ensure water security and environmental sustainability

The Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Italian Association of Engineering, Architectural and Technical-Economic Consulting Organizations (OICE) signed a memorandum of understanding, the press service of the ministry reported on May 31, 2025.
In the future, several projects will be implemented to ensure water security and strengthen environmental sustainability, the press service noted.
In digital water management, this includes monitoring precipitation and soil moisture using satellite observations (NASA, Copernicus), forecasting water balance using hydrological models (SWAT, MODFLOW), and automatic monitoring of water quality (pH, pollution, heavy metals).
Artificial intelligence and smart systems will be used in optimizing irrigation systems using GIS technologies and AI, in decision-making systems based on remote sensing (DSS).
In the area of climate change adaptation, these include: engineering solutions to combat droughts and floods; rainwater harvesting systems, water reuse, desalination; water protection based on natural methods (wetland restoration).
It is also planned to upgrade the infrastructure: design of multifunctional reservoirs (irrigation plus energy), modernization of old dams and irrigation networks, assessment of environmental impact and plans for its mitigation.
